SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
Collagen is one of the most important building materials of the body; it composes 25-30% of the amount of all proteins. All the body’s ligaments, tendons, bones and skeletal muscles function affected by collagen fibers. Collagen is present in the composition of smooth muscles, blood-vessels, digestive tract and other organs. Besides, it is the main component of skin, hair and nails.
An aging body stops producing collagen so functional disorders (unpleasant feelings) of joints appear: gnawing, stabbing, stiffness, crepitating, creaking, swelling, etc. Because of the lack of collagen skin starts to wrinkle, and hair becomes thinner. In order to postpone and slow these processes, collagen has been used to supplement nourishment from the early middle ages. Intensive scientific studies of collagen were started 40 years ago, and in 1997 Biocell Collagen II® – special partially hydrolyzed collagen type II – was presented in America for the first time.
Effect of active substances
The food supplement VERSAN contains a special patented substance Biocell Collagen II® – special partially hydrolyzed collagen type II. There are substances necessary for joints and skin – hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate – in it. Because of its unique composition and low molecular weight the special partially hydrolyzed collagen type II, received from chicken sternal cartilage, is absorbed by the body better than its analogue natural collagen. It is an effective means to sustain joint function and to help fight aging.
Cartilage tissue production stimulating and joint function improving effect
Cartilage is composed of cells – chondrocytes – that produce cartilage tissue and a web of collagen fibers while gaps in it are filled by combinations of proteoglycans that are formed when proteins join with glycosaminoglycans (hyaluronic acid, glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, etc.). These combinations absorb a lot of water and for this reason cartilage is elastic. In the course of years cartilage tissue starts to breakdown because of biochemical processes: chondrocytes cannot produce normal cartilage tissue, combinations of proteoglycans become finer and absorb less water, cartilage becomes dryer, its nutrition worsens, elasticity decreases, and bone ends are not protected sufficiently, so joint function disorders and pains appear.
Hydrolyzed collagen type II stimulates chondrocytes – cells that produce cartilage tissue – thus stimulating the formation of cartilage tissue, protecting joint cartilage from wear and promoting its re-growth. This is especially important as people grow older and when joint cartilage experiences excessive stress (arthritis, excessive weight, sport traumas). Viscous synovial fluid also contains hyaluronic acid and other glycosaminoglycans. This fluid lubricates joint cartilage, absorbs a joint’s shock and decreases mechanical friction. Besides, glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate have anti-inflammatory properties. Biocell Collagen II® present in the food supplement VERSAN helps joint function by stimulating re-growth of cartilage tissue, lubricating the joint and decreasing inflammation and pain.
Skin moisturizing and nutritional effect
Collagen type II is very important for the production and preservation of elasticity of cutaneous and subcutaneous connective tissue. It compensates the lack of collagen in the body that appears with age, evens existing wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming. Skin condition is influenced by the condition of collagen and elastin fibers as well as the viscosity of the gel that fills gaps between them. Hyaluronic acid is also important for skin. It forms a viscous gel that fills the gaps between cells and collagen and elastin fibers and is one of the main skin components that keep the moisture balance and skin elasticity.
Because of the nutritional, moistening effect and preservation of stability of collagen and elastin molecules, substances in Biocell Collagen II® improve the nutrition and appearance of skin as well as its formations – hair and nails.
Scientific studies that prove effectiveness
•In 1997 a study was carried out in the USA. 356 people suffering from arthritis in one or more joints – knees, hips, spine – took 1 tablespoon of collagen type II a day for three months. The effectiveness was measured on the basis of subjective statements and on the reduction in the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. 99.2% of the patients showed “good” or “very good” results.
•In another study carried out in the USA 60 men and women, ages 8 to 33, with arthritis of the knee, were treated for 3 months with collagen type II. The patients were examined after one, two and three months. 86% of patients who took part in the study reported greater ease climbing stairs, and 58% of patients were free of pain while at rest. At the end of the three months, 75% of patients were free of pain. The researchers concluded that cartilage regeneration occurred in 80% of the cases.
•In 1999 a study was carried out with volunteers with various types of pain syndromes in the joints (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, post-surgical joint pain, post-traumatic pain, fibrositis, radiculitis, cervical spine pain, etc.) who had been taking anti-inflammatory medicines for a long period of time. During the study they took collagen type II for 45 days, but most patients after 21 days stated that they felt a positive effect – they had less pain, joint function improved. Most of the patients were surprised by the lifestyle change after the disappearance of pain. After 45 days 89.9% of patients who took part in the study stated that the pain had subsided or disappeared.
•Clinical study was carried out with the aim to find out if collagen type II can help with rheumatoid arthritis. 60 patients with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis took part in the study. They took collagen type II received from chicken sternum for 3 months. After 3 months it was identified that most patients who took collagen type II improved substantially when compared with the group taking placebo. Four patients had complete remission of the disease. No side effects were evident.
•Clinical study in Japan was carried out with the aim to evaluate the effect of collagen type II on periorbital and overall facial skin. 40 women, ages 35-65, took part in the study. They took a dietary formulation with collagen type II and hyaluronic acid for 8 weeks. When comparing photographs made before and after the study it was noticed that after 8 weeks periorbital wrinkling decreased, and periorbital and overall facial skin looked substantially younger.
